I had the pleasure of observing an enrichment class at Glenmore Elementary led by the very talented Stacey Rotheisler (learning assistance teacher). Stacey has been teaching since 2003. We have been fortunate enough to have her in Central Okanagan Schools for the last 5 years. She provides an exceptional inclusive program for gifted students at Glenmore Elementary. Stacey ensures there is enriched programming for students who are designated gifted and plans time in her schedule each week to work with them. She also invites students who may have a particular talent in an academic area who would benefit from an enriched learning opportunity beyond the walls of the classroom. This year, Stacey and her students have done STEM activities and there is a Challenge Group that has explored Critical Thinking skills, Philosophy, and Chemistry. For the whole school, Glenmore Elementary offers an Ollie Club (coding), Geography Club, and Kangaroo Math. Many of the gifted students participate in these clubs. Stacey also supports a small group of students who are receiving accelerated math by participating in classroom instruction with older students within the school.
Stacey loves the enthusiasm and love of learning she sees in her Gifted students. When she introduces new concepts, they show their excitement! She enjoys seeing them learn together, with and from each other. Stacey also likes to challenge herself to find what challenges and interests them.
The day I observed, the students were working in groups to solve Balance Benders. Balance benders help students to develop deductive thinking and pre-algebra skills as they solve balance puzzles. Students must analyze each balance to identify the clues, and then synthesize the information to solve the puzzle. The students were engaged and were stretching their thinking abilities.
Thank-you Stacey for continuing to provide opportunities for gifted students in an inclusive manner. You are an exceptional educator!
